No single document unlocks exporting from India faster than the Import Export Code. Without an IEC, customs will not clear your consignment, your bank cannot process foreign inward remittance against shipments, and incentive schemes stay out of reach. The good news: for a prepared applicant, the DGFT issues it within days — most of the delays we see come from avoidable filing mistakes, not from the department.
Eligibility is broader than many first-timers assume. Proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, private limited companies and even individuals with a PAN can apply. You need a PAN in the applicant's name, a current bank account, a registered business address with proof, and a working mobile number and email — the IEC is delivered electronically and tied to your PAN for life, so there is no renewal to worry about later.
The day-by-day filing route
Days one and two are preparation. Gather a cancelled cheque or bank certificate showing your account number and IFSC, address proof such as a utility bill or rent agreement, and a digital photograph; companies should keep the incorporation certificate and board resolution ready. Create your login on the DGFT portal, link the PAN, and fill the ANF-2A form exactly as the names and addresses appear on your PAN and bank records — this single discipline prevents most rejections.
Days three to five are filing and follow-through. Submit the form, pay the fee through the portal gateway and note the application number. DGFT officers typically verify within two to three working days; if they raise a deficiency, respond the same day with a corrected upload rather than filing afresh. Once approved, download the e-IEC certificate and check that the PAN, name and address print correctly — that certificate is the foundation for your AD code registration and GST LUT next.
“Treat the IEC as a one-hour task done carefully, not a week of guesswork — careful first filings clear in days.” — The Harborline Team
Mistakes that stall approval
The most common hold-up is a name or address mismatch: the application says one thing while the PAN card, bank record or utility bill says another. Next comes blurry or expired address proof, and bank certificates missing the IFSC or account holder name. Each triggers a deficiency memo that restarts your waiting clock, so compare every field against its source document before submitting.
After the code arrives, resist the urge to ship immediately. Register your Authorised Dealer code at the intended port through your bank, file the GST LUT for exports without IGST payment, and confirm whether your product needs APEDA, AYUSH or drug-controller clearance. With those three companions in place, your IEC turns from a certificate into a working export pipeline — and our team verifies the full set for clients before their first quotation goes out.
